A bit about Me
I am a licensed psychologist based in Portland, Maine. Although I grew up in Northern Maine, I recently returned to Maine after completing graduate school in Illinois and a postdoctoral program in New Hampshire. I was fortunate to have the ability throughout my graduate program and postdoctoral fellowship to work with clients experiencing a variety of concerns. My clients have ranged from college students to adults, and I have experience providing individual therapy, couple’s therapy, and group therapy.
My Therapeutic Approach
I operate from an integrative perspective that combines a few different approaches to therapy. In particular, I frequently work from a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) background. To me, how you think is an important influence on how you feel and vice versa. Understanding how you think can often lead to finding stressors that are buried under everyday life events. My personal and research experiences have shown to me how important interpersonal relationships can be to how we experience and cope with stress. Due to these experiences, I often mix interpersonal and humanistic therapy together with CBT to meet the needs of my clients. During my clinical work, I prefer to emphasize the collaborative nature of therapy. This means that if we work together, I want to be flexible with you as your goals may shift and progress during therapy. As I work with you on your current concerns, I also want to help you learn skills that will help you in the future.
My Education and training
I graduated with my doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in counseling psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I completed both my doctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the counseling center at the University of New Hampshire. I received my B.A. in Psychology and Biology from Bowdoin College.
On A Personal Note
Returning to Maine has been a great joy for me. In my free time, I enjoy outdoors activities such as hiking, camping, and getting out on the water with my kayak. I am an amateur photographer as well.
